What Are Retread Tires? Bandag's Retread Process
Not all Monona tire recappers follow the same processes and procedures. But at Bandag, we didn't become an industry leader by being like other companies. World-class retreads are in our blood. They have been for decades. Bandag retread manufacturing plants are ISO 9001:2000 certified and our dealers employ BASys Manufacturing technology [content-text-2-5] our dealers utilize BASys Manufacturing technology to oversee casings in real time and improve retreading efficiency. Here's how our modern retreading process works. A Bandag specialist begins with a hands-on inspection. They examine the tire inside and out and make note of damage along the way. We don't stop at a visual inspection. The tire goes through an electrical inspection that can see "through the tire," into the sidewall and crown areas. Shearography then determines the conditions within the tire casing. The casing is inflated and readied for fresh tread. The casing is repaired so that it's once again useful. A bonding layer and new tread are carefully applied to the casing surface. The near-ready tire is covered in a special elastic and prepared for curing. The curing step permanently adheres the tread to the tire. Last but not least, the tire goes through another round of inspections to ensure it meets our high standards.
The Bandag Difference in Monona Is a Big Difference
There's no bigger name in retreads, and there's no better product you'd want to be installed on your fleet than Bandag. That's why more fleets turn to Bandag for service, advice, and tires. Bandag retreads give back in more ways than one. Quality commercial tires can be retreaded multiple times. Bandag's most cost-efficient fleet client, one of the largest modern fleets, retreads casings over and over – even at the steer position. Layer a responsive tire management program on top of retreading and you can maximize your investment by stretching the effective life of your fleet tires.
Retreading is a business decision you can stand behind, and for a couple of reasons. Retreading helps you save green by going green. While a brand new tire requires 22 gallons of oil to produce, a Bandag retread only uses seven gallons. Additionally, Bandag's FuelTech fuel-efficient retreads lead the industry in terms of low rolling resistance (i.e., fuel economy) among retread and new tires. We get that all of that information can be tough to put into context, so consider this example: one 18-wheel semi-truck riding on retreaded tires instead of new ones would save enough energy to power hundreds and hundreds of homes. What if your home was one of them?
