What Are Retread Tires? Bandag's Retread Process
Not all Orangeburg tire retreaders follow the same procedures and process. But at Bandag, we didn't become an industry leader by being like other companies. We've been making world-class retreads for over 60 years. Bandag retread manufacturing plants are ISO 9001:2000 certified and our dealers use BASys Manufacturing technology to monitor tire casings and increase retreading effectiveness. Here's what the full retread process looks like. A trained Bandag technician performs a visual inspection on the tire to be retreaded. They inspect it inside and out, marking any visible damage. We don't stop at a visual inspection. The tire goes through an electrical inspection that can see "through the tire," into the sidewall and crown areas. The tire casing goes through a separate review, after which the casing is inflated and the surface is prepped for new tread. Damaged casing parts are expertly removed and repaired, and the casing is once again useful. A bonding layer and new tread are carefully applied to the casing surface. The tire is nearly done. It's encased in an elastic envelope and ready for curing. The new tread is permanently affixed to the tire after curing. Finally, the tire goes through another inspection to make sure our safety standards are met.

We get that all of that information can be tough to put into context, so consider this example: put retreaded tires instead of new tires on a single 18-wheeler and you'd save enough energy to power thousands of homes across America. One of those homes could be yours.
