Bandag Retread Process: What Are Retread Tires?
Some Toledo tire recappers haven't updated their processes and procedures in years. But at Bandag, we didn't become an industry leader by being like other companies. World-class retreads are in our blood. They have been for decades. Bandag retread manufacturing plants are ISO 9001:2000 certified and our dealers use BASys Manufacturing technology to oversee casings in real time and enhance retreading efficiency. Here's how the rest of the retread process goes. A trained Bandag technician performs a visual inspection on the tire to be retreaded. They inspect it inside and out, marking any visible damage. The next inspection is an electrical one and uses technology that can "see through the tire" into the crown and sidewalls—where the human eye can't see. Shearography then determines the conditions within the tire casing. The casing is inflated and readied for fresh tread. The casing is repaired so that it's once again useful. A bonding layer and new tread are expertly applied. The tire is almost ready. It's covered in special elastic and prepped for curing. The new tread is permanently affixed to the tire after curing. Last but not least, the tire goes through another round of inspections to ensure it meets our high standards.

There's no bigger name in retreads, and there's no better product you'd want to be installed on your fleet than Bandag. Many fleets come to Bandag for advice, service, and tires. Bandag retreads give back in more ways than one. Quality commercial tires can be retreaded one, two, or even three times depending on the situation. Bandag's most cost-efficient fleet customer, one of the largest modern fleets, retreads casings over and over – even at the steer position. Layer a responsive tire management program on top of retreading and you can enhance your investment by stretching the service life of your fleet tires.
You can feel good about equipping your fleet with retread tires. Retreading can lower your fleet's environmental impact. The numbers say it all. A Bandag retread only requires seven gallons of oil to produce. But a brand new tire? It takes over three times as much: 22 gallons. Plus, Bandag's FuelTech retreads are some of the lowest rolling resistance tires on the market, for both new and retread tires. We get that all of that information can be tough to put into context, so consider this example: a single 18-wheel truck that utilized retreaded tires instead of new tires would save enough energy to power thousands of homes. What if your home was one of them?
