What Are Retread Tires? Bandag's Retread Process

Not all Abbotsford tire retreaders follow the same procedures and process. But at Bandag, we didn't snag almost double the market share of our nearest competitors by being like other companies. We've been designing and manufacturing standout retreads for more than four decades. Bandag retread manufacturing plants are ISO 9001:2000 certified and our dealers use BASys Manufacturing technology to oversee casings in real time and enhance retreading efficiency. Here's how the rest of the retread process goes. A qualified Bandag specialist starts by performing a hands-on examination of the tire that will be retreaded and noting any damage. The next inspection is an electrical one and uses technology that can "see through the tire" into the crown and sidewalls—where the human eye can't see. The tire casing goes through a separate review, after which the casing is inflated and the surface is prepped for new tread. Damaged casing parts are expertly removed and repaired, and the casing is once again useful. An uncured bonding layer is extruded onto the prepared casing surface. New tread is applied. The near-ready tire is covered in a special elastic and prepared for curing. The new tread is permanently affixed to the tire after curing. Last but not least, the tire goes through another round of inspections to ensure it meets our high standards.

Experience the Bandag Retread Difference in Abbotsford

There's no bigger name in retreads, and there's no better product you'd want to be installed on your fleet than Bandag. It's no surprise that many fleets choose Bandag for tires, service, and advice. Bandag retreads give back in more ways than one. Quality commercial tires can be retreaded multiple times. Bandag's most cost-efficient tire buyer, one of the largest fleets in the world, retreads casings over and over – even at the steer position. Add an attentive tire management program with retreading and you can boost your investment by lengthening the service life of your fleet tires.

You can feel good about equipping your fleet with retread tires. Retreading is an environmentally responsible tire choice. The numbers say it all. A Bandag retread only requires seven gallons of oil to produce. But a brand new tire? It takes over three times as much: 22 gallons. [2] Plus, Bandag's FuelTech fuel-efficient retreads lead the industry in terms of low rolling resistance (i.e., fuel economy) among retread and new tires. We understand that those facts can be difficult to visualize, so here's a real-world example: one 18-wheel semi-truck riding on retreaded tires instead of new ones would save enough energy to power hundreds and hundreds of homes. [3] One of those homes could be yours.
